The Local Governments Pavilion

The Local Governments Pavilion includes the exhibition spaces of 16 municipal and seven local governments including the host city, Yeosu. The pavilion presents the dynamic visions of governments in Korea, with exhibits that reflect the characteristics of the cities they represent. Images, panels, and graphics combine in the space to introduce the current development projects and future directions of the governments.

This joint pavilion consists of 23 separate spaces for 16 municipal and seven local governments including the host city, Yeosu. Each offers diverse exhibits that reveal the charm and beauty of Korea; be sure not to miss any!

Local Governments Pavilion - Seoul
This exhibition space captures the spirit, landscape and people of Seoul – the capital city of Korea and truly the nation’s pulse and energy center. Seoul’s journey from hardship to prosperity is chronicled here, and visitors can expect to be fascinated by the journey this city has taken to rise to prominence on the international stage.

Exhibits here introduce Busan as a globally-minded marine city and its role as a gateway of the Pacific Rim, emphasize the city’s harmonious coexistence with the ocean, and promote its thriving tourism industry.

Local Governments Pavilion - Daegu
Daegu is a city of knowledge economy embracing the endless possibilities of the 21st century. The city’s exhibits promote its hosting of the World Energy Congress 2013 and other upcoming events, and introduce its new and renewable energy industry and various tourist attractions.

Local Governments Pavilion - Incheon
Incheon actively promotes its international status as the heart and economic capital of Korea in its exhibit. Specifically, the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Incheon International Airport – which sets global standards for customer service, and Incheon Port – with its 130 years of history, are all featured here, as are the city’s tourist industry and its beautiful islands of Gangwha and Ongjin.

Local Governments Pavilion - Gwangju
A city of light (“Bitgoeul”) and creativity, Gwangju is known for its impressive cultural heritage. The city’s exhibits reveal its artistic spirit and beautiful landscape, and present the city’s future vision of becoming a center for high technology products. The 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade is also promoted here.

Local Governments Pavilion - Daejeon
Daejeon is the base city for the Daeduk Special District Science Belt. The exhibits here shed new light on this green and innovative city, and introduce its green growth industry and technologies.

Local Governments Pavilion - Ulsan
Ulsan is the industrial capital of Korea, and as such, takes its environmental preservation responsibilities very seriously. Ulsan’s exhibition space presents the city’s efforts to realize a sustainable marine environment, and its research into the possibility of converting CO2 into environment-friendly high polymers. The exhibition here focuses on ways Ulsan’s advanced technology will lead to a brighter future for the city and the nation.

Local Governments Pavilion - Gyeonggi-do
Under the slogan, “Finding the Future of Korea in the West Coast,” Gyeonggido began its Gold Coast Project. Gyeonggi-do’s exhibition space focuses on this project, in which the province hopes to pioneer the blue ocean market of China (the “West Coast”), and in the process, become a hub for new development in Korea. Other exhibits feature the culture of the province and its tourism and green growth industries.

Local Governments Pavilion - Gangwon-do
Gangwon-do’s exhibits deliver a strong message of the importance of preservation efforts for the East Coast, a place of outstanding natural beauty. The 2018 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which will be hosted by the province, is actively promoted here, as are Gangwon-do’s efforts to strongly establish its identity, reinforce its competitiveness in the global market, and develop its brand image.

Located in the middle of Korea, Chung cheongbuk-do in its exhibition space proposes the bio and solar industries as viable ways to build a sustainable, green energy future.

Local Governments Pavilion - Chungcheongnam-do
Exhibits here propose the future visions of Chungcheongnam-do under the theme, “Happy Change, New Chungnam.” The Baekjae Cultural Festival held annually in the region and Naepo New City, a large scale development project, are also introduced.

Local Governments Pavilion - Jeollabuk-do
Exhibits introduce the past, present and future of Jeollabukdo where culture, art and tradition are gloriously alive. As the Korean government designated 2012 as the “Year to Visit Jeollabuk-do,” the area’s charming attractions are introduced throughout its exhibition space. Future visions related to marine culture and technology, and the province’s new development engines are also presented, offering a preview of the bright and healthy tomorrow of Jeollabuk-do.

Local Governments Pavilion - Jeollanam-do
Exhibits here promote the image of Jeollanam-do as the home of green farming and quality foodstuffs. It also introduces the province’s mudflats and research into marine resource utilization, and its development of new and renewable energy. Jeollanam-do’s tourist attractions, culture and food are featured as well.

Local Governments Pavilion - Gyeongsangbuk-do
Gyeongsangbuk-do is an attractive tourist destination with a long history and impressive culture and natural environment. The province’s exhibit highlights its breathtaking natural scenery of mountains, rivers and oceans, and offers a 4D image experience of the beautiful island of Ulreung. Gyeongsangbuk-do’s future visions are featured as well.

Exhibits here highlight Gyeongsangnamdo’s efforts to achieve prosperity through its global-minded, pioneering spirit. Presented are the province’s environment tourism initiatives; its policies for enhancing the quality of life of citizens; its dedicated support of high technology industries; and its systematic local governance.

Local Governments Pavilion - Jeju Special Self-Governing Province
Exhibits here shed new light on the characteristics and values of Jeju’s coast, and propose innovative future visions for the island in preparation for the marine era. Visitors can learn about the history of Jeju’s marine industry as well as the unique culture of the island and its famed female divers, Haenyeo.

Local Governments Pavilion - Yeosu, Jeollanam-do
The Expo host city, Yeosu, highlights its present values and future development with a focus on the city’s distinctive marine characteristics. With its outstanding natural environment, Yeosu has great potential to become a resort city and international marine tourism and sports hub. The endless possibilities that this bright future holds are explored throughout the space. Yeosu also focuses on promoting the city as “The city you’ll want to return to, and invest in.”

Local Governments Pavilion - Suncheon, Jeollanam-do
Suncheon is a city newly attracting global attention for its pristine green environment and the living coast of Suncheon Bay. Exhibits here introduce Suncheon’s major tourist attractions, including the International Garden Exposition Suncheon Bay Korea 2013, emphasizing the eco-friendly image of the city. Efforts of the local government to preserve the health of Suncheon’s environment are also presented.

As the home to many large steel plants, Gwangyang is an important global logistics base. The city’s exhibition space, however, focuses on the city’s wonderful natural environment, presenting Gwangyang as a marine and leisure city and a rich repository of nature.

Local Governments Pavilion - Goheung, Jeollanam-do
A land of prehistoric mystery, Goheung is famed for the many dinosaur eggs and footprint fossils that have been uncovered there. It also boasts the Space, Stars and Science Museum and the Space Experience Center for Youths, and hosts many noted aerospace festivals. Under the theme “Life of the Ocean and the Mystery of Space,” Goheung presents the magnificent scenery of its ocean cliffs and diverse space-related attractions and experience opportunities in its exhibition space. The “Mudlympics,” with mud transported from the mudflats in Sunjung, Goheung, is a fun experience for visitors.

Local Governments Pavilion - Boseong, Jeollanam-do
Exhibits here present the ambitious spirit of Boseong as the largest green tea producer in Korea, and promote the area’s culture, tourism and products as well as its future visions for the marine era. Boseong is presented as a resort city with a beautiful natural environment.

Local Governments Pavilion - Namhae, Jeollanam-do
Namhae focuses on its status as a marine tourism city where sports and leisure intertwine as well as its geographic and cultural assets. Namhae’s vision of marine management and the future green industry and its development potential in these areas are also introduced here.

Local Governments Pavilion - Hadong, Gyeongsangnam-do
Located in the middle of the south coast, Hadong connects the sea, rivers and mountains. Its exhibits feature images of Hadong’s ecology, and introduce its culture and traditions, tourist attractions, and visions for a future marine city. The naval battle of Noryang led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin is also presented here, and be sure not to miss the Fishing Village Experience Zone!
